Open Office as Gaeilge

For anyone interested we’ve put screen shots of Open Office in Irish online. Localization is not yet complete but Kevin Scannell & lads have been doing a fantastic job so far on what is a pretty big project. If you have good Irish you might consider getting involved and helping out with translating or testing.

Rubber dolly

Have you ever bought a blow up doll? Would you? How about a rubber doll? Would you fork out $6,500 for one? Some men do. Whatever you’re into I say. I mean, the dolls such as “Real Doll” are pretty well put together and look quite realistic and there are any number of reasons why some men might want one. Some men suffer from extreme loneliness, some men may be infirm or have a disfigurement, some men may like the comfort of what is, in a sense, a big teddy (with tits), or is it simply as Salon puts it, a “3-D version of a Playboy centrefold“? Fair enough I say. However [insensitive bastard mode engaged] this photograph on Salon is one of the saddest things I have seen in yonks … playing computer games with a rubber doll! “Davecat”, for the love of God, stick Sidore back in the closet, go out and make some real friends. Playing computer games with your doll is just plain feckin’ weird!

Google dot Org

Google have announced plans to spread the wealth by setting up a $1bn charity fund which will fund social investment projects in the developing world!
At the time of Google’s initial stock market flotation last year founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin made the pledge that they would set up a foundation to do “good things for the world”. The result … Google.org, “the philanthropic arm of Google”, to which Google are committing 1% of Google’s stock, almost $1Bn! Good news, fair fucks I say!

Irish Blog Awards

Via the rebel smoker, Damien Mulley is mulling over the idea of creating an Irish Blog Awards. Not a bad idea, there’s certainly a good wide range of Irish blogs ar líne, although you can already pick out some likely winners like Slugger, Twenty or Richard Delevan mar shampla. Still, it might throw the spotlight on some lesser known blogs.
Categories aren’t fixed yet so if you have suggestions you should get in touch with Damien. If D happens to read this (that’ll make 4 visitors this month, i’ll have to pay for extra bandwidth) I suggest:

1. Best Irish Language Blag
2. Best Blog on a Lesser Known (less popular, more specific?) Subject
3. Most Opinionated Blogger (why not?)
4. Most Informative Blog
5. Best post from a blogger who has completely lost touch with reality
6. Best contribution from a blog entitled Ráiméis in a leading role without the use of stunt doubles

Twodaze post…

Twodaze post is sponsored by the letter “R” … the number “Eleventy” … and the phrase “Bag of tits”. Oh and Big Bird is a cunt and Bert is as bent as an S-hoop.

Talent runs in the family

My son (5) appears to have inherited my supreme talent for telling jokes. He came home from day-care the other day with a joke which he would only tell in Finnish. The joke auf Englisch:

A fish walks into a shop and asks the man “Can I have some Light Milk” (what the Finns call low-fat)
The man says “Do you want a bag”
The fish says “No, it’s Light Milk” [badda boom!]
“Oh Damn!”
“I am Superman”

Now, where the “Oh damn. I am Superman” bit comes from I have no idea, and I have serious doubts over the species of the customer but at least he got the punch line near the end, I usually tell the punch line first (that supreme talent I was telling you about). Kids, ha!

Cyprus vs R.Ireland

‘Big Game Part 1′ today, a must win for Ireland. I’m not confident at all but fingers, toes and other bits crossed. (listening to it on RTÉ)

So far:
5min – GOAL by Stephen Elliot Cyprus 0 – 1 Ireland
13mins – Penalty save by Given, holy fuck!
20+ mins – sounds like a shite game, Ireland are a mess, giving Cyprus too much of the ball
Half Time and it really sounda like an awful performance by Ireland.

Second half on, slight improvement by Ireland, Matt Holland is on
59mins – blow for Ireland as Duff is off injured (Reid comes on)
75+ mins – signs of life in the Irish team, from Stephen Elliot at least who is playing well
88mins – David Connolly comes on for Robbie Keane, it’s David’s first game in about 2 years
Full time – 3 points for Ireland. Christ, they didn’t make it easy on themselves

Roll on Switzerland next wednesday in Lansdowne Rd.

Other games:
Israel 2 – 1 Faroe Islands (R)
Switzerland 1 – 1 France (R)

Group Four Table
1 Israel 10/18 (plyd/pts)
2 Switzerland 9/17
3 France 9/17
4 Rep of Ireland 9/16
5 Cyprus 9/4
6 Faroe Islands 10/1

Google Reader

I’ve just started playing with Google Reader, it looks pretty cool so far. It’s basically just an online news & rss reader. I guess it must be just released as I never heard of it before. With Google’s ‘personalised home’ you can add RSS feeds there, alongside your Gmail or whatever so that’s kinda handier. Maybe if Reader could be integrated with (or at least linked to) the Google ‘personalised home’ that would be handy.

30 Gigs Free email

Yep that’s correct, 30gigs.com are offering free email accounts with storage space of 30 Gb! The last thing I need is another email account, what with the 1000 mail accounts which come with my website plus my Gmail account (and umpteen extra Gmail accounts there if I need them) but I decided to sign up for the 30Gb to check it out. It’s also invite only, which seems to be the fashionable way to do it, but they link to sites giving away the invites. I signed up in seconds, logged in and immediatly got an error:

Preference file, ../data/macaonghusa@30gigs.com.pref, could not be copied from temporary file, ../data/macaonghusa@30gigs.com.pref.tmp. Contact your system administrator to resolve this issue.

That’s a good sign! As is the small print on their front page: “Notice: We collect personal information on this site.”
I’ve only been playing with it for a short while and so far it seems quite a bit slower than Gmail, but it has a nice clean look with no ads. I’ll post a screen shot later. I have a handful if invites if anyone is curious and wants to test it.

Your life on a USB drive

If the worst comes to worst and some huge disaster befalls us, such as some psycho called George dropping nukes and ya have to leave home in a hurry, what do you bring with you? Ok, this doesn’t apply to Ireland so much because …. well … where can ya run to? If any nukes happen to fall on our wee isle (not likely) we’re pretty much fucked I reckon, and I don’t see any major hurricanes heading our way in the near future. But it’s an interesting question nonetheless. The New York times has an article on “how to prepare for one really quick getaway” and they suggest making a list of important things like credit card numbers, scanning birth certs, marriage license etc, and saving it all on a USB drive. Not a bad idea I suppose (encryption & waterproofing would be vital) indeed i’m sure such a thing might have come in very handy for many of those fleeing the hurricanes in the States. On the other hand, passports and relevant documents stuffed into a waterproof bag might be just as good.
Personally, if we ever have to leg it, i’ll be bringing weapons (replica Samurai sword and a hurley) to protect my family so if ya even look sideways at me i’ll get medieval on your ass! You’ve been warned!
