30 Gigs Free email

Yep that’s correct, 30gigs.com are offering free email accounts with storage space of 30 Gb! The last thing I need is another email account, what with the 1000 mail accounts which come with my website plus my Gmail account (and umpteen extra Gmail accounts there if I need them) but I decided to sign up for the 30Gb to check it out. It’s also invite only, which seems to be the fashionable way to do it, but they link to sites giving away the invites. I signed up in seconds, logged in and immediatly got an error:

Preference file, ../data/macaonghusa@30gigs.com.pref, could not be copied from temporary file, ../data/macaonghusa@30gigs.com.pref.tmp. Contact your system administrator to resolve this issue.

That’s a good sign! As is the small print on their front page: “Notice: We collect personal information on this site.”
I’ve only been playing with it for a short while and so far it seems quite a bit slower than Gmail, but it has a nice clean look with no ads. I’ll post a screen shot later. I have a handful if invites if anyone is curious and wants to test it.

  1. According to the Diggers I read, no one is getting 30 Gigs of free mail storage. Plus the privacy issues with some of their policies are disconcerting.

  2. Thanks lads. I don’t intend to use it as it definitly seems dodgy, interesting to test it anyway.

    Dear Friend

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Julius Mimbutu, the only son of the late Congolese Finance Minister Claudius Mimbutu.

In late 1997, while on his way to a meeting of Central African Finance Members, my father’s plane crashed into the mountains in mysterious circumstances. There were no survivors. Before he departed for his trip, my father left with me the key to a bank safety deposit box in Lomé, Togo. Perhaps foreseeing his own doom (as he had many enemies at the time), he entrusted me with the safekeeping this key and the contents of the safety deposit box. He told me that should anything happen to him, I should use the contents of the safety deposit box as a way to safeguard my own personal safety and that of my family.

Having been in hiding for the last eight years, I now am in a position to follow my father’s instructions. The safety deposit box in Lomé, Togo contains several e-mail addresses, each with a capacity of FIFTY TERABYTES (50,000,000,000,000,000,000 BYTES.)

Dear friend, in order to realise the value of these e-mail addresses, I humbly ask that you consider becoming my business partner. I ask that you forward me your IP details, so that I can transfer these e-mail addresses to you. In return for the use of your facility, I am prepared to offer you 30 of these e-mail addresses (total capacity ONE THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED TERABYTES (1,500,000,000,000,000,000,000 BYTES.))

I look forward to reading your soonest reply, my friend.

    Julius Mimbutu
