Still Winter

It was snowing today, can ya believe it? April the shaggin 4th and the snow was coming down in buckets. This bloody winter will never end. Global warming my hole. Someone would want to have a chat with Mother Nature. I would but we’re no longer on speaking terms, something to do with me calling her a skanky ho a while back … I had good reason to, late for work and an inch of ice to scrape off the feckin car.
The Finn’s like to boast about having four seasons, but no spring this year! Spring is probably the worst season here anyway. Summer is nice, but only 2 months. Autumn is gorgeous, not sure if i’ll stay around for the next one though.

Domain name conundrum

My head is wrecked trying to think of a new cool and interesting domain name. If I sell the current one (looks likely) i’ll have to find a new virtual home but am hopeless at thinking of cool names. I thought “poncdotpiste” might be one option (“dot” in Irish, English & Finnish). Or maybe I could just go for “Raiméis” or “Seafóid”, though i’d prefer Raiméis as just the blog name not the domain name as the domain will contain more than just the blog. Maybe “hopelesslyunimaginativecunt.com” might be appropriate.
By the way if you decide to register one of these names in the hope of selling it to me at a profit i’ll ask Twenty to declare you a cunt, and once you have been marked as such by Twenty that’s it, life will no longer be worth living.
Anyway, any clever ideas? How did you chose your blog/domain name?

The good, the bad and the dog ugly…

The Good
- My exotic dancing tour of the Far East is at an end. I’m home, recovered from the few viruses I picked up over there and am ready for blogging again.

- I’ve been made an offer for my domain … 4 figures … i’ve accepted.

The Bad
I’m out of tea bags. Fuck.

The Dog Ugly
If I sell my domain i’m not sure what will hapen to Raiméis. I may just relocate to a new domain (trying to think of a new and interesting URL, dickhead.com is gone), then again I may just quit blogging if it’s too much hassle getting set up again. No decisions have been made yet. One thing is for sure, i’ll miss all the good folk i’ve met in the Irish Blog O’Sphere so I probably won’t quit.

Sin é.

Slow blogging

Blogging may be slow here for the next two weeks or so. I’m off on a business trip tomorrow and I’m not sure if there’ll be net access where i’m heading.
For those of you going to the Irish Blog Awards this weekend have a good night, make sure to pass on my regards to all. Best of luck to all the nominees. Also fair dues to Microsoft for very generously offering to cover the costs of the function room, and someone make sure to buy Damien a pint or two for all his hard work!

Stan da man

Great result in Lansdowne last night. Who could have predicted that? Three-nil against the Swedes. Well done Stan and lads. I was totally against Stan getting the managers job, I still don’t think he’s the right man for the job but of course he’s manager now and no matter what we have to get behind our team. Hopefully last night’s victory is the start of good things for this team. Roll on the European Championship qualifiers.

Katapult game

It’s rare I post games here but i’ve been having good craic with this one, via TCAL, Sesam Katapult. (it’s in Nor-wee-gin but you can figure it out).
My high score so far 1604.8/ALta.

Dublin riots revisited

I wanted to avoid posting much on the riots as the blogoshpere is saturated by commentary on Saturday’s events, hence my only post on the subject so far was short and simple (much like myself). However I wanted to highlight two points which I feel are very important.

The Big lad (hat-tip UI) had the following point to make (check the comments)…

“On a philosophical note, there’s something strangely touching about the sight of Gardaí risking life and limb to protect northern Unionists.”

While people are crying about failures of democracy and blaming one another for the sad events of Saturday let us not forget that on the day the under-manned and under-equipped Gardaí stood their ground against a vicious attack from the rioters to protect the rights of our visitors from the North. These men and women are the true representation of the citizens of Ireland.

Paul, in the midst of a discussion with myself, made this excellent point (again check the comments)…

“I find frustrating is that whilst the Irish government and political parties are constantly (and rightly) pressurising the UK government for explanations for the collusion cases, those who suffered at the hands of the Republican terrorists have been forgotten about.

Not only that, but the party whose armed wing caused those atrocities is involved in a concentrated campaign to whitewash their crimes from the history books. They shouldn’t be allowed to get away with it.”

This is a very important point. The Protestant people of NI have also suffered greatly during the troubles, many decent people have lost loved ones and they deserve justice. This is a message which needs to be heard. The question is, are Frazer, Love Ulster & FAIR really the best people to be spreading this important message? Not in my opinion.

Photo essays and iconic images

A couple of interesting tidbits for you.

Time photo essays
If you’re not a regular visitor to Time.com you should consider paying it a visit once in a while. Check out their Photo essays section, there’s some damn interesting stuff there on various topics from sports to Middle Eastern politics. I thought Women Warriors was interesting (I always liked a girl in uniform) and Life in the Googleplex. Buried in mud takes a look at the recent tragedy in the Philippines.

Not everything is always Black or White
I was searching for something insignificant and happened upon this interesting transcript of a January 2005 phone conversation between Aleksandra Mir and Irish artist Jim Fitzpatrick. Of course many of you will know Che Guevara had Irish links, but now you can add to your knowledge bank the fact that it was Jim Fitzpatrick who created one of the most famous and probably widely published images of the Argentine-born revolutionary.

Winter Olympics: Swedes take final gold

Torino 2006 logoThe old enemey does it again, Sweden takes gold in ice-hockey. It was a fantastic tournament for Finland but in the end they just couldn’t produce the goods in the final. Well done to Sweden on their deserved win … feckers.

Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I want to be,
Pony trekking or camping,
Or just watching TV.
Finland, Finland, Finland.
It’s the country for me.

You’re so near to Russia,
So far from Japan,
Quite a long way from Cairo,
Lots of miles from Vietnam.

Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I want to be,
Eating breakfast or dinner,
Or snack lunch in the hall.
Finland, Finland, Finland.
Finland has it all.

You’re so sadly neglected
And often ignored,
A poor second to Belgium,
When going abroad.

Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I quite want to be,
Your mountains so lofty,
Your treetops so tall.
Finland, Finland, Finland.
Finland has it all.

Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I quite want to be,
Your mountains so lofty,
Your treetops so tall.
Finland, Finland, Finland.
Finland has it all.

Finland has it all. Except an olympic gold.

In Gratitude

Thank you to the Love Ulcer scum for bringing their hate to our fair capital. And thank you to the RepublicanSF scum for tearing up the city. Me ye all die roarin’.
