Dublin riots revisited

I wanted to avoid posting much on the riots as the blogoshpere is saturated by commentary on Saturday’s events, hence my only post on the subject so far was short and simple (much like myself). However I wanted to highlight two points which I feel are very important.

The Big lad (hat-tip UI) had the following point to make (check the comments)…

“On a philosophical note, there’s something strangely touching about the sight of Gardaí risking life and limb to protect northern Unionists.”

While people are crying about failures of democracy and blaming one another for the sad events of Saturday let us not forget that on the day the under-manned and under-equipped Gardaí stood their ground against a vicious attack from the rioters to protect the rights of our visitors from the North. These men and women are the true representation of the citizens of Ireland.

Paul, in the midst of a discussion with myself, made this excellent point (again check the comments)…

“I find frustrating is that whilst the Irish government and political parties are constantly (and rightly) pressurising the UK government for explanations for the collusion cases, those who suffered at the hands of the Republican terrorists have been forgotten about.

Not only that, but the party whose armed wing caused those atrocities is involved in a concentrated campaign to whitewash their crimes from the history books. They shouldn’t be allowed to get away with it.”

This is a very important point. The Protestant people of NI have also suffered greatly during the troubles, many decent people have lost loved ones and they deserve justice. This is a message which needs to be heard. The question is, are Frazer, Love Ulster & FAIR really the best people to be spreading this important message? Not in my opinion.
