Staunton for Ireland job

Oh no, are they serious? Steve Staunton to be new manager of the Irish soccer team? Prepare for a few more years of shite results in Lansdowne Road.

  1. From assistant manager of a club in 13th place two divisions below the Premiership to manager of a country that has reached the last 8 of the World Cup? Even with Robson as “mentor” as the article suggests, if it was anyone but the FAI making the decision, I’d be laughing this off as a sick joke.

I’ve always said it and I always will – the Ireland job deserves someone with a PROVEN TRACK RECORD – and if the Merrion Square blazer-boys don’t come up with the cash to get one, they are doing their fans a serious dis-service.

All that being said, we have feck all choice but to back their appointee.

  2. Well I plan to whinge and moan like I did throughout McCarthy’s reign, hopefully the results won’t be too depressing over the next few years… :-/

  3. Cheers for the comment on our blog, good to know others have been down the same road.
As for Stan the Manager, maybe Saipan and all that has convinced the Merrion Square brigade that all this qualifying for prestigious tournaments is an unnecessary hassle, and the best way to avoid any qualification success and ensure a prolonged spell in the international doldrums is to appoint Walsall’s Assistant coach to pick the International team (like when Father Ted entered the Eurovision, just so we wouldnt have to host the feckin’ thing any more).

  4. No one remotely respected in club football would touch the Ireland manager’s job, end of.

Managing club sides and international sides are not comparable jobs. Managing international sides is about getting already fit and fully trained players used to playing with each other and prepared to give it that bit above themselves for the pride of playing for their country. If you accept that, then the choice was probably limited to Staunton, Aldridge and possibly Chippy. I would have given it to Aldridge but there you go.

The personal abuse directed at Stan because he actually wanted to play for his country in a World Cup is staggering. The people banging on about ‘lack of experience’ would have been dancing in the streets if the Mayfield Mentaler had been given the job. These are the same people who suggested the Thug and Sir Red Nose would make a dream team partnership!

The detractors are in a great situation now. Want us to do badly to prove them right or want Stan to succeed and have their abuse “stuck up their bollix”! Nice corner to be backed into.

  5. Hi Deagla,
I disagree that the choices were limited to those 3. The last 2 managers were both Irish and couldn’t produce the results. What’s needed IS experience of football at that level, someone who knows how to manage a football team and how to get the best results from limited resources. Stan is not the man, but here’s hoping he pulls it off.
