I’m offaly offended

I was just checking my site stats, checking where youze all are coming from and just noticed that someone found Raiméis by searching for “ira bollox” on Doogle. Doogle adds an extra word when you do a search and the actual keywords which give me a #1 placing are “ira bollox Offaly”. I guess I should be offended, I don’t want someone thinking I am from Offaly.

  1. Funny search engine, though :-)
By the way, what’s wrong with Offaly? Is it worse than Cork? :-)

  2. “what’s wrong with Offaly?”
    Everything!

    “Is it worse than Cork?”
    Yeah, almost! :)

  3. Ah Jaysus, come on.

What’s wrong with Offaly? It’s next to Laois. But it’s been made trendy by hip and happening TV show, Pure Mule.

Well, sort of. For a given value of hip and happening.

Is Offaly worse than Cork? Of course it is. Here’s a list of things which Cork has but Offaly does not:

    1) international airport
    2) longest train tunnel in Ireland
    3) tallest ugly 1960s listed building in Ireland.
    4) The Liam McCarthy Cup
    5) Sean Og O hAilpin
    6) Half of Munster rugby’s grounds
    7) Ronan O’Gara
    8) a university
    9) an international port including a direct link to France
    10) a coastline
    11) scenery of any description
    12) an opera house (but then Dublin doesn’t have one of those either)
    13) an English Market full of great food not costing an almight fortune.
    14) Debenhams and a Marks & Spencers
    15) Blarney Castle
    16) a land border with both Limerick AND Kerry – I mean how wrong can you go?
    17) at least two reasonable surfing beaches
    18) A Guinness World record for ceili dancing
    19) A Gaeltacht of some description
    20) League of Ireland Championship.

    uhem.

  4. I take it you have a soft spot for Cork? :)

  5. Oh yeah, the same sort of soft spot I have for oh let me see…

yeah. nowhere else, really. Although Brittany is good too. ;-)

  6. Winds and Breezes, be patient with me, I don’t live in Ireland and I miss some of the obvious things :-)
Thanks for explaining me the difference, but I hope you don’t take offence if I say that some of them things I never heard before ;-)
To me Ireland is all beatiful and some parts are more beautiful than others. I don’t have the necessary feeling to discern a county from another just from who’s living in it…
All I knew is that Cork is top list for less pleasant counties (or inhabitants?). From today I put Offaly in the same list :-)

  7. ‘All I knew is that Cork is top list for less pleasant… inhabitants’

  8. @dealga….

    behind Dublin, surely… :-)

  9. when you’re that far in front, the rest of us don’t see who’s leading!

  10. Hey guys, I meant no offence to anyone!
I just reported what I learned during my travels to Ireland a what I read in other Irish blogs… :-)

  11. Don’t worry Antonio, it’s all just friendly “slagging” :)

  12. I could take offence at the slagging Offaly is taking in this post, I have blood ties there, but I won’t instead here is a list of good things to be found in the Faithful County:
    1. Clonmacnoise, the biggest and bestest monastic city in the country, so good that even the Pope couldn’t resist visiting it!
    2. The book of Durrow, a classic masterpiece of Christian literature was found in Offaly.
    3. Admittedly, it was one of the first counties to be planted, but unlike Laois, in my opinion it has held onto its Gaelic heritage pretty well.
    4. Pallas lake, I believe it boasts of having the biggest horesflies I have ever seen.
    5. The Esker Riada, the only way to travel east west until they built roads!
    6. Slieve Bloom Mountains, the highest point in the midlands.
    7. The Bog of Allen, large tracts of blanket bogs, which have kept us warm for generations and boast a massive variety of rare and endangered plants.

So there you go, I could list more stuff but I’m afraid of boring you. But I’m sick of people running down the Midlands just cause they’ve never taken the time to visit the place! So there.
Oh and Antonio, don’t worry, I’m not really upset, just making my point and standing up for Biffos everywhere!

P.S BIFFO – Big Ignorant Fucker From Offaly!

  13. Fi, I know county Offaly well, I’ve been to Clonmacnoise three times, I know the book of Durrow being in competition with book of Kells for their beautiful decorations, I know the Esker Riada and the Bog of Allen which I think I saw some part of.
I slept in Shannonbridge, one of the most quiet and romantic villages I’ve ever seen, I slept and had dinner in Tullamore.
What else can I say, it’s a beautiful county.
I drove through it several times and I’m sure I have good memories of what I’ve seen :-)

  14. Well i’m a midlander Fi, so I’m assuming the right to slag off other midlanders, especially since i’m usually the one being slagged off :)

  15. my mum’s family are from Laoise and Kilkenny and my sister lives in Tullamore. So I reserve the right to say: “Edenderry is a shitehole”
