Burley for Ireland job?

JL reckons George Burley is the man to take over as manager of the Rep.Ireland soccer team. Burley left Hearts quite recently due to “irreconcilable differences” with the club board. A number of sites such as World Cup Latest and Eleven-a-side now claim Burley is the firm favourite to take over the job. To be honest I had to do a web search on George as I didn’t have a clue who he was, but going by his bio he seems to be better than most of the other contenders for the job, especially since popular favourite Martin O’Neill is out of the running. I wonder will Alex Ferguson now join the race since things appear to be going downhill at United?

  1. Oh no we don’t want Sir Alex. I know he’s one of the greatest managers living or dead blah blah blah but he’s old and a bit tired. It’s a pity Martin O’Neill isn’t available but I think Burley isn’t a bad idea. At least he’s got experience!

  2. Totally agree about Ferguson & O’Neill. I’m a tad unsure about Burley though after reading some more info about him. His success has been quite mixed but I suppose when compared to Steve Staunton or Frank Stapleton he’s a much better choice.

  3. For the record, I’m aware of his failings as well. I was actually hoping to test the water in the Blogosphere but unfortunately irishblogs.ie is down so only my regulars saw my choice!

The thing about Burley is although he has had a few dodgy seasons, so had Charlton and McCarthy before they got the post. The point was, they had proven they could do it at the highest level, and a post like the Ireland boss deserves someone of this calibre.
